Well, friends, it has been a week for me, but here’s what I’ve got in terms of media reflections.
I went through my semi-annual “oh god I haven’t watched anything from the past three years of TV” freak-out and promptly started going through my TV calendar backwards. First was Cursed. Cursed is many things but I’m not sure good is one of them. I was initially just bummed that the first fifteen minutes promised a fun and ridiculous teen fantasy show with hints of Merlin camp thrown in and yet forty minutes later the TV screen was literally splattered with wolf blood. Who let Frank Miller write a teen girl book?? There are also things that kept up a low-grade ping for me – like the fact that the only Asian characters are tree people covered in make-up and for a good chunk of the show the only other black characters we meet are related to Arthur. It’s positioning itself as feminist, and I do think the show does a good job forefronting women’s stories, but it’s pretty heavy-handed at times and occasionally excruciatingly straight. The show picks up in the back half, and I’m definitely going to watch the next season, but I’m just mad that there are five episodes to watch before anything really happens or themes of the show start to emerge. I will say, it is EXTREMELY pretty, I love the costume and set design work, all the actors are extremely attractive. I never watched 13 Reasons Why but Katherine Langford gives me slight Sophie Aldred vibes? I’ve had a slight Daniel Sharman problem since Teen Wolf (the problem being that Isaac is the only reason I watched past Season 3) and I really enjoy where the show will take his characters. Very predictable, and sigh-worthy, but because it’s him…well, fine. It’s gonna be one of those things which I bury deep, deep in my soul, never speak of to anyone, yet can explain in great detail the complex political machinations and world-building. Born in the dawn….
Making History was already a great show by the time it got canceled and I wish there were more of it. Guess I’ll go watch Happy Endings again but someone please tell me where I can watch Leighton Meester be funny again. I know, I know, it’s already canceled…
Because I am reaching a Certain Time in my life very soon, I’ve decided to spend this week doing a survey of all my obsessions and fandoms. It might not all fit in. Right now the plan seems to be this:
- Mon: Power Rangers – Mighty & Turbo movies
- Tues: Smallville
- Wed: Supernatural/Gilmore Girls
- Thurs: Doctor Who (some Buffy)
- Friday: Chris Evans
- Weekend: 60’s – Beatles, Monkees & UNCLE
This gets in the way of my plan of watching the movie that was number 1 in the box office the week I was born (Flatliners) but I believe in myself, I can make this work.
I’m tired, I’m stressed, I have too many projects and things going on….okay, back to folklore.
